Dining with strangers at the Long Table

When I first heard about the Long Table Event taking place in Dubai, I was beyond excited to be a part of it and why wouldn't I be? Eating lunch in the open air with the gorgeous view of Burj Khalifa isn't an everyday thing. Also, after learning that 'gravlax' and 'assorted cheesecakes' are going to be a part of the meal, there was no way I would miss this opportunity. Moreover, dining with strangers? Well, it sounds like a fun adventure to me!

A large gathering on an insanely Long Table, allowing diners to interact with each other and enjoy a communal street party atmosphere is what the concept is all about. It was originally created as an alternative dining option in Germany.

Dubai, as we know that it never fails to try unique concepts (especially when it comes to food) hosted its very first Long Table Event under the blue skies on Friday, 26th February 2016 serving 1,000 guests including me. Organised by Emaar Hospitality Group, the Long Table was set all along Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown, inaugarating the Dubai Food Festival 2016 with a bang.

A three course family-friendly 'sharing' meal was prepared by the award winning chefs from The Palace Downtown Dubai, The Address Dubai Mall, Vida Downtown Dubai, Manzil Downtown Dubai and the Address Dubai Marina.

When I say 'sharing' I mean literally sharing from one platter. That is how the interaction took place as conversations began with 'Pass me the bread basket' while ended with 'Add me on Facebook'.

1. Spiced Chick Peas with Pomegranate seeds layered on Roasted Eggplant.

2. A Nordic dish called Smoked Salt Soft Gravlax (differently cured salmon) which was one of the best from the menu.
1. Spanish slow cooked Lamb Shoulder placed on grilled vegetables.
2. Grilled Shish Taouk accompanied with Sumac Mashed Potatoes and Mince Rice.

LASTLY, FOR THE DESSERT (my favorite part of the event) we were served Cheesecakes!

We were welcomed warmly and assisted to our respective seats. Everyone around had smiling faces. Probably the only downside was the quality of service as the staff weren't attentive enough.
There was face painting activity (even for adults) and a fun photo session with props. Also, thanks to the funny jugglers and unicyclists who kept us entertained throughout the event.

P.S. - Rumour has it that there will be another Long Table Event taking place in Dubai by the end of 2016 but this time the table is expected to be much more longer! So in case you've missed being a part of the very first one, worry not :)
